{"id":45,"date":"2011-01-01T03:54:09","date_gmt":"2011-01-01T03:54:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.onioncap.com\/?p=45"},"modified":"2011-01-03T15:03:18","modified_gmt":"2011-01-03T15:03:18","slug":"peles-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.onioncap.com\/?p=45","title":{"rendered":"Pele&#8217;s Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.onioncap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/DSCF00541.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-47\" title=\"Pele's Art\" src=\"http:\/\/www.onioncap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/DSCF00541-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Pele\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.onioncap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/DSCF00541-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.onioncap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/DSCF00541.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>This morning we went to the eastern coast of the Big Island, where we&#8217;ve been staying this week.\u00c2\u00a0 More on that later.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived about 5 am because we&#8217;d heard the night before that the lava flow from Kilauea had once again come close to the old, ruined highway where it could be approached on foot with a reasonable walk.\u00c2\u00a0 The best time for viewing is just before sunrise.<\/p>\n<p>And sure enough, there it was, once again covering the already covered roadway with yet another layer of lava.\u00c2\u00a0 Little ferns had begun popping up in the older, cooled lava flow.\u00c2\u00a0 As this molten rock oozed and crackled across the previous layer, the little ferns burned quickly with tiny sparks shooting.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t poke it with a stick, but I could have.\u00c2\u00a0 You could get within a few feet of the lava pouring out from under the crusty layer that formed atop the fiery red earth blood, but any closer and you risk your hair bursting into flames or your flesh cooking.<\/p>\n<p>The whole island is made of this stuff, maybe the whole world.\u00c2\u00a0 Looking at it, it made me aware that we live on a flaming ball covered with a cool crust &#8211; just cool enough for us to live here.\u00c2\u00a0 This is the stuff of the solar system, of space, of stars, boiling up from the not so deep.\u00c2\u00a0 What&#8217;s a couple miles when we are talking about planet sized ball of lava?
